Heraclius Launches the Byzantine Counteroffensive
Cilicia (southeastern Anatolia)· Anatolia
Emperor Heraclius, having spent years rebuilding his shattered army, sailed from Constantinople to Cilicia and launched a bold counteroffensive against the Sassanid Empire. Rather than directly recapturing lost provinces, he struck through Armenia into the Persian heartland — a strategy of unprecedented audacity that would eventually reverse all Sassanid gains.
Historical Significance
Heraclius's counteroffensive is one of the greatest military comebacks in history. From the brink of total defeat, he would systematically dismantle Sassanid power over the next six years.
Islamic Relevance
This campaign began in the same year as the Hijrah — the Prophet's migration to Madinah. Both leaders were making their defining strategic moves in 622 CE: Heraclius launching his war and Muhammad ﷺ establishing his community. The Quran's prediction that the Romans would be victorious 'within a few years' (Surah Ar-Rum 30:4) was beginning to be fulfilled.
