Founding of the Tang Dynasty
Chang'an (Xi'an), China· East Asia
Li Yuan (Emperor Gaozu) overthrew the failing Sui dynasty and established the Tang dynasty, which would become one of the greatest and most cosmopolitan civilizations in world history. The Tang would eventually rule over 80 million people and establish diplomatic and trade relations spanning from Japan to the Mediterranean.
Historical Significance
The Tang Dynasty presided over a golden age of Chinese civilization — in poetry, art, technology, and governance. At its height, Chang'an was the largest city in the world with over one million inhabitants.
Islamic Relevance
The Tang Dynasty would become the Islamic world's most significant eastern trading partner. Muslim merchants established permanent communities in Chinese port cities like Guangzhou. The Huaisheng Mosque, traditionally attributed to a companion of the Prophet, was built during the Tang era.
